Are you a Carnal Christian? I used to be. Was there a time when you had a fire burning in your soul for Jesus? Maybe you have been trying to light that fire again but just can’t seem to get a spark lit let alone a fire.
Has something happened that caused you to turn away from God? Maybe He took someone away from you or maybe life just got tough and you leaned on your own understanding.
Do you find yourself looking at other Christians with envy? Wanting so desperately to have what they have; happiness, peace, love, and most of all a relationship with God. I once did. I was once a Carnal Christian. Living by own rules and old sinful nature.
The Bible talks about Carnal Christians in Romans 8:6-7
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
The truth is we are all or were carnally minded at one time or another. We are human and that is just the way things are. We are not perfect in anyway.
When we act and think carnally minded we are not fulfilling God’s purpose. We are bringing misery upon ourselves instead of glorifying God in all that we do.
Our 3 Enemies
- The World – can mean the evil people of the world or the evil things of the world. Anything that has a tendency to lead us to sin.
- The Flesh – sins of temper, irritability, moodiness, jealousy, pride, selfishness, an unforgiving spirit, anxiety and fretfulness, harshness, complaining, criticism, lust–all of these things characterize the flesh.
- The Devil – Paul referred to the devil as “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2). His objective is to defeat the will of God in the world, the church and the Christian. He is the unceasing enemy of the soul.
Christians Have No Excuses Not To Have Victory
As Christians we have no excuse not to have victory in our life. I learned this first hand when I was of a carnal mind. All three of things I mentioned above can be overcome with the proper mindset and action. You have to make the choice to reject the things of this world.
I used to believe the world was against me and so wasn’t God. I had no victory in my life because I wasn’t trusting God. Instead I was looking outwards in the world for love and comfort. My own sins kept me apart from God and his love by not asking for forgiveness.
When I finally came around and made the choice to repent I still didn’t live a victory life. Why? Because deep down I didn’t believe God really forgave me. The devil was telling me daily that my sins were too bad for God to forgive.
The devil tore me down daily, chewed me up, and then spit me back out. Throwing sin after sin in my face. Repeating them over and over in my mind. Breaking my heart more and more as each sin was remembered. It was a battle that only I could control.
I had to understand that when I asked for forgiveness from God, He forgave me and He still loved me the same. I also had to understand that with sin comes consequences. Once I accepted that and dealt with the consequences I was no longer a Carnal Christian. And you don’t have to be either.
